The long-term goals of the Brien Holden Vision Institute – to understand, prevent, cure and correct abnormalities of the eye and vision system and to contribute to public health efforts worldwide to eradicate avoidable blindness and vision impairment – are dependent on a stable source of revenue.
Our commercial activities are the primary source of revenue for the Institute and are driven from within the Business Unit. It’s here that the Institute’s contract services, intellectual property and market identification takes place.
At the Brien Holden Vision Institute we undertake projects in a variety of collaborative arrangements with research partners and industry clients. In some of these, our clients invest in projects and the Institute conducts the research. In these cases the Institute jointly owns the intellectual property and commercial applications flowing from the research and receives royalties from the products and patents resulting from the research projects.
Some of the Institute’s research is done solely under contract while on other projects the Institute retains full ownership of the project and the project outcomes. The Institute charges its commercial clients for research and development work but it is the royalties from the commercial outcomes that continue to fund future projects and public health care interests. |
