Governance, Management & Collaboration

The Institute’s research is complemented by effective structures and procedures to manage, protect and commercialise Intellectual Property.

The Commercialisation Committee develops and reviews business and commercialisation plans, in consultation with Project teams. The committee also meets with venture capital groups and potential industrial partners, and regular contact is made with external commercialisation advisors.

Product focus approaches have been established to increase the probability of producing output capable of commercialisation.

Commercialisation Pathways

A number of paths to commercialisation and technology transfer are considered within the Institute. These include licensing to local or international companies with an agreed royalty return; setting up spin-off companies to develop and commercialise specific products ; and sale of intellectual property or educational packages.

  • International licensing: the Institute’s research outputs are primarily developed through collaboration or licensing with other companies. This provides access to global markets for our research and industry development. Licensing arrangements depend on the nature of project IP rights, but a minimum arrangement is substantial royalties and/or equity for the Institute.
  • Business Development: the Institute develops particular products or expertise that would be better served via a new venture through the generation of new companies in Australia and overseas. Participants and collaborators are given preferential opportunities to be involved in these ventures.

Commercialisation Highlights

Projects the Institute has focused on include:

  • Contact Lenses: including the affordable silicone hydrogel and perfect contact lens, commercialised through our partner CIBA Vision.
  • Accommodating Gel: maximising the return on the commercial potential of a revolutionary technology capable of reversing presbyopia.
  • Anti-Myopia Programme: the Institute has developed soft contact lenses and spectacle technology to treat myopia. These two strains of IP are in the final stages of clinical trials and are licensed to 2 separate major corporations.
