Intellectual Property (IP) developed by projects and staff at the Brien Holden Vision Institute is appropriately protected through effective IP management and commercialisation strategies in order to maximise commercial opportunities.
The IP position of projects is systematically evaluated by Project Managers, Programme Directors and the Commercialisation Committee, if necessary in consultation with industry partners. The preparation of detailed invention disclosure documents is mandatory for all researchers.
The Commercialisation Committee then develops business plans, in consultation with Project teams, and decides on appropriate IP protection, taking into account anticipated strategies for commercialisation. Once the decision has been made to seek formal IP protection, the form of protection is selected - patent, confidential or controlled release.
The Commercialisation Committee also meets with venture capital groups and potential industry partners. Regular contact is made with external commercialisation advisors. An IP consultant works with the Institute to strengthen the Institute's IP position and project staff and students are trained in IP management and risk assessment.
The Institute has established an integrated commercialisation database to manage patent information including providing tracking and time-critical alerts for patents, applications, provisional and invention disclosures. |
