Professor Mark Willcox, BSc PhD

Mark Willcox is the Chief Scientific Officer at the Brien Holden Vision Institute, where he overseas the scientific and research output.

Professor Willcox is an outstanding researcher in the field of ocular inflammation, tear film and microbiology. Having graduated with a PhD in medical microbiology from the University of Manchester in 1987, he moved to Australia where he took up a fellowship at the Sydney Dental Hospital for five years.

In 1993, Mark joined the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Cooperative Research Centre for Eye Research and Technology (CRCERT), before moving to the Institute, where he has since remained.

In addition to his role at the Brien Holden Vision Institute, Mark is Professor at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW and an Executive Director of the Vision Cooperative Research Centre. He has built an accomplished research career, marked by the publication of over 180 refereed research papers to date, 5 patents and numerous invitations to present his research nationally and internationally.

Professor Willcox is an Honorary Research Associate of the Institute of Dental Research, Sydney and a Member of the Executive Committee of the Ocular Microbiology Special Interest Group, Australian Society for Microbiology. He is also a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Australian Society for Microbiology and the American Society for Microbiology. Mark is also a member of the Scientific Board of Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, an Executive member of the International Society for Contact Lens Research and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of Minomic Pty Ltd.
