The Institute possesses the expertise and facilities to undertake a range of clinical research, clinical trials, scientific research and technology development activities.

Clinical research and clinical trials

Clinical research activities, conducted though the Clinical Research and Trials Centre, are dedicated to developing and testing products for vision correction, including:

  • contact lenses
  • contact lens solutions
  • spectacles
  • new optical instruments and techniques.

The Institute’s core values of participant welfare, research innovation and excellence, underpin all research activities conducted.

The Clinical Research and Trials Centre is a specialised eye care  facility with capabilities and programmes specifically designed to meet the needs of the ophthalmic industry.

Scientific research

The Brien Holden Vision Institute conducts world-class scientific research and product development in its outstanding, fully-equipped microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology facilities.

The Institute’s scientific research activities aim to enhance knowledge of ocular health and investigate new ways of combating inflammation and infection of the eye. Where possible, the Institute utilises this knowledge in broader medical applications and there are examples of this in several current projects.

Scientific research outcomes are enhanced through access to the clinical trials facilities of the International Clinical Trials Centre, which enable laboratory discoveries to be investigated in a clinical setting.

The Institute possesses a group of very experienced microbiologists who perform routine diagnostic microbiology services for the International Clinical Trials Centre, which work in conjunction with many of the microbiology projects.
