Sydney is an open, warm and welcoming city that makes you feel really at home. It has all the facilities and entertainment you would expect from a modern, cosmopolitan city, but at the same time has its own unique history, climate and lifestyle.

Most people are impressed by the iconic features - Sydney Harbour, the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, great beaches. A little less noticeable, but probably more important as a resident, is the ease of everyday life here.
From a recreational point of view, Sydney has a lot to offer. It’s surrounded by national parks and has one of the most stunning coastlines in the world – there is surf everywhere! On top of that, there’s the possibility of participating in just about any sport you can think of, with a climate that is perfect for outdoor activities.
I love the beach – surfing is one of my passions – and I’m fortunate to live in a location that is not only a short bike ride to work, but also close to the beach. I don’t think in any other major city you could go surfing during your lunch break!
Apart from the outdoor stuff there is plenty of other things – festivals (particularly in summer), events, scenic walks, a great range of restaurants, bars and cafes. Beyond the city, the Blue Mountains are stunning and only a short journey. There are several accessible wine-producing regions and plenty a small coastal towns and reserves that you can travel to for a quiet weekend away.
Of course, the real reason I’m in Sydney is to get the best education I possibly can. The Institute has a great international reputation and has given me a wonderful opportunity to not only attain a high level qualification but to develop a range of research and practical skills under the guidance of world-renowned researchers and academics.
The PhD programme is very demanding but there is terrific support for students – academically and socially – that makes it really rewarding. The Institute has achieved a great balance between helping people to excel academically and promoting social interaction. There's a warm collegial environment where students mix easily with academics, executives and other staff. Organised and spontaneous social events help to make that transition easy and a lot of fun.
I'm not only fortunate to be receiving a great education that will provide amazing career opportunities. I've also made some great friendships and got to experience living in a unique city and country.
If you're lucky enough to get the same chance, take it!
