Contact Lens Disinfecting Solutions PDF Print

Contact lens disinfecting solutions are needed during routine lens wear to minimise bacterial colonisation of lenses and help in the general cleaning of the lens surface. The Institute has studied the effectiveness of various multipurpose contact lens disinfecting solutions for manufacturers and for internal research purposes.

The Institute has been instrumental in developing new guidelines for the more effective use of multipurpose disinfecting solutions. It has also recommended the re-instigation of rubbing and rinsing procedures to maximise the effectiveness of disinfectants.

The Institute has also been promoting the instigation of a standardised method for measuring disinfecting ability of solutions against Acanthamoeba sp. This project also evaluates the clinical performance of various multipurpose disinfecting solutions.
